How do I find an animal?
There are four different ways to find an animal on Abdo Zoom. These navigation methods are designed to help students unpack the information about their selected animals.
- Use the world map in the middle of the page to narrow your search by geography. First, click on a continent or ocean. That will bring you to a list of habitats. After you click on a habitat, you can choose the type of animal you are looking for. Once you select a type, you will find a list of all the animals of that type who live in that habitat and in that geographic area.
- In the bottom left corner, there is a “Find by Habitat” button. Clicking this will take you to a list of every habitat. Select the habitat to see a list of all the types of animals that live in that habitat. When you click on the type, you will find all of the animals of that type that are found in the selected habitat. Note that mammals are also broken down into smaller groups.
- In the bottom right corner, there is a “Find by Type” button. Select a type of animals to see all of the animals of that type. Note that mammals are broken down into smaller groups.
- There is a search bar at the top of the screen. You can type in the name of an animal and go directly to that animal’s page.
What is the fastest way to get to an animal page?
The fastest way to get to an animal page would be to use the search bar found in the top center of the page.
How do I use the read-to-me function?
The main text, cool fact, and quick stats for every animal can be read aloud. Words on the page highlight as they are spoken. To have the text on a given section be read aloud, click on the blue button that looks like a speaker. The button is on the upper left corner of each tab and on the left side of the overlays. The sound may take a second or two to load. You can also pause the sound by clicking on the blue button again.
Why are some words blue?
The blue words are glossary words. If you click on them the meaning of the word will pop up.
What do the buttons at the top mean?
There are five buttons at the top of each page.
The Abdo Zoom logo in the upper left hand corner will take you back to the “What do you want to learn about?” page where you can switch among subscribed databases.
The red button with a house on it means “home.” This button will take you to the beginning world map.
The green button with a puzzle piece means “interactive games.” This takes you to our three interactive games.
When you are on an animal page, there will be an orange button with a printer on it. When you click on this button, you will be able to print.
When you are on an animal page, there will be a yellow button with an arrow pointing up from a box. When you click on this button, a window will open which will allow you to share the link to the animal page. You can either copy the URL or send it in an email.
